A Saree Draping Guide — Nivi, Bengali, Mumtaz & the Modern Drapes
Eight draping styles, what they flatter, and how long each takes — a working guide for brides, mothers and the salon chair.

A saree is engineered fabric. The drape decides whether nine yards reads as a costume or as couture. This guide covers the eight drapes most-requested at our Bagalur studio, what each one flatters, and how long to budget for them in your getting-ready schedule.
The Nivi drape
The default for most South Indian weddings. Pleats stack neatly at the navel and the pallu falls over the left shoulder. Flatters most body types. Budget 15 minutes.
The Bengali drape
Wide box pleats, two pallu shoulders, and the signature keys-and-anchor look. Heavy with red-and-white silks. Budget 25 minutes — the pallu balance is everything.
The Mumtaz drape
Multiple cross-body layers create a sculpted silhouette. Photographs beautifully in motion. Best for cocktail nights or reception sarees. Budget 30 minutes.
The Maharashtrian Nauvari
A nine-yard drape tied like a dhoti for ease of movement. Traditional for festivals and certain wedding rituals. Budget 30 minutes with a trained draper.
The Gujarati seedha pallu
The pallu falls over the right shoulder to the front, showcasing the saree's embroidery. Classic for Gujarati and Rajasthani brides. Budget 20 minutes.
Lehenga-style drape
A modern technique that gives a saree the silhouette of a lehenga. Wildly popular for reception looks. Budget 25 minutes.
Belted modern drape
A thin embellished belt cinches the pallu. The look is editorial and clean — perfect for engagement parties and sangeet evenings. Budget 15 minutes.
The dhoti-saree fusion
Pre-stitched dhoti pants with a saree-style pallu. Increasingly booked by working professionals attending Bangalore weddings on tight timelines. Budget 10 minutes.
Questions on saree draping, answered.
- How long does professional saree draping take?
- Most drapes take 15 to 30 minutes depending on style and fabric weight. Bridal silks with heavy pleating take longer than chiffons or georgettes.
- Do you offer saree draping at home for weddings?
- Yes. Our drapers travel to wedding venues and bridal homes across Bangalore North — Bagalur, Bhartiya City, Jakkur, Hennur and surrounding areas.
- Which saree drape suits a tall bride?
- The Mumtaz, lehenga-style and belted modern drapes accentuate height beautifully, while the Bengali drape balances the silhouette without shortening it.
