Olaplex and Bond-Repair Treatments - Do You Actually Need Them?
Bond-builders like Olaplex are the most-talked-about hair category of the decade. Here is what they really do, when they are worth the add-on, and how Bangalore salons use them.
Bond-repair treatments - Olaplex being the best-known brand - work on a different principle than keratin, smoothening or nanoplastia. They do not smooth the cuticle. They rebuild the broken disulphide bonds inside the hair shaft that bleach, colour and heat tools fracture. Here is how to know whether you need one and how to use them properly.
What a bond-builder actually does
When you bleach or heavily heat-style hair, the disulphide bonds inside the cortex break. The hair feels weaker, stretches when wet, and snaps at the ends. Bond-builders contain a single active molecule (bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate in the case of Olaplex) that re-links those broken bonds.
Other reputable bond-builders include K18, Wella Ultimate Repair and L'Oreal Smartbond. The chemistry differs, but the principle is the same.
When you genuinely need one
Anytime you bleach or lift colour by more than 2 levels - the bond-builder is added inside the bleach mix and used as an immediate after-treatment.
Before and after any keratin, smoothening, Copacabana or nanoplastia service.
As a standalone in-salon treatment every 4-6 weeks if you heat-style daily.
As a weekly home mask if your hair has visible breakage or chemical damage.
When you do not need one
Virgin, uncoloured hair with no chemical history rarely needs a bond-builder - regular conditioner and a monthly hair spa are enough. Bond-builders are also not a replacement for a moisture mask if your hair is dry but not actually damaged.

- Yes - Olaplex No.3 (used at home weekly) is a good maintenance product. But the in-salon Olaplex No.1 and No.2 used during colour are the steps that do the heavy lifting and cannot be replicated at home.
- How often should I do a bond-repair treatment?
- If you colour or bleach: every colour appointment. If you heat-style daily without chemical processing: every 4-6 weeks in salon plus weekly at home. If you are growing out healthy hair: monthly at home is plenty.
