Anyone who wants visible movement or volume — a U cut deliberately changes nothing but the outline, and if your complaint is that your hair is flat or heavy, this will not fix it. Ask for a step cut or feathering instead. It also does very little on curly hair, where the curl already scatters the perimeter.

What is the difference between a U cut and a V cut?+
Both keep length in the centre and shorten toward the sides — the difference is how sharply. A U cut curves gently and reads soft and rounded. A V cut angles to a point and reads dramatic and elongating. A V shows more on thick hair; a U is the safer choice on fine hair, where a point can look sparse.
Does a U cut add volume?+
Not really, and it is honest to say so. It changes the outline, not the weight distribution. It can make the ends look fuller because the curve keeps more hair in the perimeter, but if you want lift you need layers, not a U.
How much length do I lose with a U cut?+
Almost none at the centre back — often as little as half an inch. The sides come up more to create the curve. It is the least length you can give up and still get a shaped haircut.
Can I get a U cut with layers?+
Yes, and it is a very common combination: a U-shaped perimeter with face-framing layers or long steps above it. You get the soft outline plus the movement. Ask for both explicitly, because a plain U cut on its own includes no layering at all.
Is a U cut good for thin hair?+
It is one of the better options. Nothing is thinned or layered, so no density is lost, and the rounded edge keeps the ends looking denser than a V cut would. Keep the curve shallow for the fullest-looking result.
